In most jurisdictions, the minimum requirements for licensure are a doctoral degree in psychology or related field, supervised professional experience, and a passing score on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). Check with your Board for the specific requirements in your jurisdiction.
The EPPP (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology) is one of the requirements for the licensure of psychologists in the United States and Canada. It is produced by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) with the assistance of the Professional Examination Service (PES). An Information for Candidates handbook that describes the development and content of the EPPP and procedures for applying for and scheduling the exam is available on the ASPPB website (www.asppb.org).

The EPPP is administered by computer at Thomson Prometric Test Centers; a paper-and-pencil format is only available in jurisdictions that do not have access to Prometric centers. The exam consists of 225 multiple-choice questions that each have four answers, only one of which is correct. You will have 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete the exam. Only 175 of the 225 items are scored; the remaining 50 items are experimental questions that are being assessed for future use and do not count toward your final score. The experimental questions are not identified, however, so you must answer every question with the same effort.
Raw scores on the EPPP are converted to scaled scores ranging from 200 to 800. The ASPPB recommends a passing score of 500 as the cutoff for independent practice, but each state and province establishes its own cutoff and you should check with your Board to determine the cutoff in your jurisdiction. Note that the raw score equivalent of a scaled score of 500 varies somewhat from exam to exam because each item is weighted in terms of difficulty level, and the exact number of items you will have to answer correctly depends on the difficulty level of the items in the version of the EPPP that you take. On average, however, a scaled score of 500 is equivalent to a raw score of 123 or 70% correct.
The ASPPB categorizes the knowledge base addressed by the EPPP in terms of eight content areas. As of August 1, 2011, these areas and the percent of the 175 scored items that address each area are:
Our study materials cover all eight content areas but organize the areas in terms of 11 content domains that more closely resemble traditional academic subject areas (Abnormal Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Life Span Development, etc.)
The ASPPB has transitioned to a new Web-based application system for the EPPP. Once you receive an email from ASPPB notifying you that you can register, you can do so at www.asppb.net. If you do not receive your eligibility email, contact your state or provincial licensing board to advise them that you need to be authorized.
Your scores will be available immediately after completing the exam.
Most candidates who use our materials spend about 3 months preparing for the EPPP and study approximately 20 to 25 hours each week. The amount of time you’ll want to spend studying for the exam depends on several factors, including your current level of familiarity with the information addressed by the exam and the time it ordinarily takes you to master new material.

Like the field of psychology, the EPPP is continually evolving. Therefore, it’s essential that you use the most up-to-date study materials, otherwise, you won’t be prepared for questions on the new issues and research in the field that are addressed by current versions of the exam. AATBS will provide one free revision to EPPP customers who purchase any study materials for up to 6 months after purchase upon request at no charge.

The best way to improve your test-taking skills is to practice applying your content knowledge and effective test-taking strategies to as many practice questions as possible before taking the EPPP. Our study materials include thousands of practice questions, and effective test-taking strategies are described in our Strategies Book. Our instructors also demonstrate the application of these strategies at our Live 4-Day Workshop and in our online Self-Paced Workshop.
We recommend that you take and review TestMASTER practice exams at regular intervals throughout your preparation for the EPPP, that you begin taking these exams during the first weeks of your preparation, and that you take and review all of the TestMASTER practice exams at least twice. These exams will help you track your progress in mastering the material, refine your understanding of the topics, and enhance your test-taking skills. Additional guidelines for taking TestMASTER exams are provided in the Strategies Book.
Incorporating note-taking and other active study strategies (e.g., highlighting, creating flashcards, constructing concept maps) into your preparation is critical to your success on the EPPP. Using these strategies will help you organize, synthesize, and memorize information as you study and, as a result, will make it easier to recall information when taking the exam. See the Strategies Book for additional information on incorporating active study strategies into your exam preparation.
The main reason for attending a Live 4-Day Workshop is to increase your chance of success on the EPPP! The workshop provides a structured study session during which our experienced instructors review the most essential concepts, illustrate how to apply content knowledge and effective test-taking strategies to exam-like questions, and answer any questions participants have about information presented in our study materials. In addition, attending a workshop can reduce the feelings of isolation that weeks or months of studying alone can produce.
We recommend that you schedule something relaxing for the day and evening before the exam so that you are well-rested and alert when taking the EPPP. If you’re traveling to another city to take the exam, try to travel in the early part of the day so you’ll have time to relax. If you can’t refrain from studying, limit yourself to a few topics (those you’ve had the most trouble remembering), your flashcards, or other brief notes.
Please contact us at (800) 472-1931 with any questions you still have. One of our knowledgeable customer service representatives or educational consultants will be happy to answer your questions about the EPPP and the resources AATBS offers to help you prepare for it.
