Course Description: This course is intended for practitioners, particularly social workers, who work with new mothers and provides information about screening practices for mothers with postpartum depression. First, a brief summary of postpartum depression and social workers involvement in the care of mothers and children is presented. Then an overview of the literature examining postpartum depression, how it relates to social work, and screening new mothers for postpartum depression is discussed. The authors’ study methods regarding postpartum depression screening methods for new mothers by social workers is examined. Results of this study, implications, and discussion of the importance for social workers to learn about postpartum depression and also how to screen for it in their education training is examined. Finally, limitations of this study are presented.

Learning Objectives:

1. Cite key research findings on postpartum depression in new mothers and its relevance to social work.

2. Summarize the various suggestions of how to enhance social work education, practice, and research.

3. Provide limitations and implications of social workers’ screening practices for postpartum depression.
