Before scheduling your examination, be sure you understand the contents of the Candidate Handbook.
Step 1: If you have an active MFT associate registration, you must first take the California Law & Ethics Exam. If you have taken and passed the old California Standard Written Exam (prior to 1/1/2016), you do not need to take the CA Law & Ethics Exam and may proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Once you've passed the CA Law & Ethics Exam and have completed your 3,000 hours (or have taken the old California Standard Written Exam prior to 1/1/2016), you must apply to and be approved to take the new Clinical Exam.

The California Law and Ethics course for MFTs, Social Workers, and Counselors is now available! This 12 credit hour course may be required by the Board for candidates who do not pass the California Law and Ethics exam within the specified time frame.
If you do not pass the California Law & Ethics Exam, you may still be eligible to renew your initial registration number by taking this continuing education course.
You'll always be studying the current version of the exam.
